Accessibility Philosophy
Saint Mary's Christian University was not built as a conventional institution that later added accessibility features. St. Mary's was designed from the ground up as an accessible learning environment. Every feature, every interface, every assessment pathway, and every interaction was created with diverse learners in mind from the earliest design phase. This is not retrofitted accessibility; it is foundational accessibility.
Too many educational institutions treat accessibility as a compliance checkbox: add alt text to images, provide a ramp to the lecture hall, offer extended time on exams, and call it done. Genuine accessibility requires a fundamentally different approach. It means asking, at every design decision, "Who might this exclude?" and then building the alternative before anyone has to ask for it. It means recognizing that the standard way of doing things in higher education, sitting in a lecture hall, reading a textbook, writing a timed exam, was designed for a narrow subset of learners and inadvertently creates barriers for everyone else.
St. Mary's is committed to meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards across our entire learning platform. But compliance with technical standards is the floor, not the ceiling, of our accessibility commitment. Beyond technical compliance, we have built three complete learning modes (Read, Watch, Listen), seven assessment pathways, an AI tutor that never judges or loses patience, voice interaction for students who cannot type efficiently, self-paced progression that respects individual processing speeds, and a fully online format that eliminates physical barriers entirely. Our goal is not merely to accommodate diverse learners; it is to build an environment where diverse learning is the norm, not the exception.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
The CAST UDL framework identifies three principles essential to effective instruction. St. Mary's implements all three.
Multiple Means of Representation
Different learners perceive and comprehend information differently. St. Mary's provides three complete pathways through every lesson, each engaging different sensory and cognitive channels.
- RSVP Read Mode for focused text processing
- Interactive Video Mode with synchronized slides and audio
- Podcast Listen Mode with scrolling transcript
- AI tutor provides explanations in multiple formats
Multiple Means of Action & Expression
Different learners demonstrate mastery differently. St. Mary's offers seven assessment pathways so every student can show their best work in the format that suits them.
- AI comprehension checkpoints (voice or text)
- Written assignments and research papers
- Oral examinations and verbal assessment
- Portfolios, projects, scenarios, and traditional exams
Multiple Means of Engagement
Different learners are motivated and sustained by different things. St. Mary's provides multiple engagement channels to keep every student connected to their learning.
- AI tutor available 24/7 for questions and support
- Voice interaction via press-to-talk
- Self-paced progression with no time pressure
- Frequent checkpoints for regular achievement feedback
Built for Different Brains
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions among university-age students, affecting an estimated 5 to 7 percent of the adult population. Students with ADHD typically possess normal or above-average intelligence but face challenges with sustained attention, executive function, and impulse control that can make traditional academic environments deeply frustrating. Long lectures demand sustained passive attention. Dense textbooks create visual overwhelm. Distant deadlines require sustained self-direction without external structure. These are precisely the conditions under which ADHD creates the greatest difficulties.
St. Mary's's learning environment is structured to work with ADHD rather than against it. The RSVP Read Mode eliminates the visual distraction of a full page of text by presenting words one at a time in a fixed position, creating a forced-focus channel that many ADHD learners describe as transformative. Interactive Video Mode breaks content into short, focused segments with frequent comprehension checkpoints between them, providing the regular stimulation and goal-completion that ADHD brains crave. The self-paced format means students can study in shorter, focused bursts rather than forcing themselves through long sessions that exceed their attention capacity.
The AI tutor is available 24 hours a day and never loses patience with repeated questions or tangential conversations. For ADHD students who may need to revisit the same concept multiple times or who learn best through conversational exploration rather than linear reading, this tireless, judgment-free resource is invaluable. There are no penalties for taking breaks, no attendance requirements, and no social pressure from peers or professors who might grow impatient. The entire system is designed to accommodate the natural rhythm of the ADHD mind: intense focus when engaged, rest when needed, and the freedom to return without consequence.
Dyslexia
Dyslexia affects approximately 15 to 20 percent of the population to some degree, making it the most common learning difference. It primarily affects the ability to decode written text accurately and fluently, but it does not reflect intelligence, comprehension ability, or capacity for complex thought. Many dyslexic individuals possess exceptional strengths in spatial reasoning, creative thinking, and verbal communication. Yet the heavy reliance on reading in traditional higher education means that dyslexic students are often graded on a skill deficit rather than on their actual understanding of the material.
St. Mary's's Podcast Listen Mode fundamentally changes this equation. Every lesson is available as continuous, professionally narrated audio with a synchronized scrolling transcript. Dyslexic students can engage with the full content of every lesson through their auditory channel, which for many dyslexic learners is their strongest processing pathway. The transcript is available for optional visual reference but is never required. For dyslexic students who do prefer to read, the RSVP format can actually be more accessible than traditional text because it eliminates the crowded visual field of densely packed paragraphs that causes letter-tracking difficulties.
Assessment flexibility is equally important. The oral examination pathway allows dyslexic students to demonstrate their understanding verbally, bypassing the writing process that can be slow and effortful for them. AI checkpoints accept voice responses through press-to-talk, so students can answer comprehension questions by speaking rather than typing. Text sizes are adjustable throughout the platform, and the clean, spacious interface design avoids the visual clutter that can compound reading difficulties. At St. Mary's, dyslexic students are assessed on their knowledge and thinking, not on their ability to decode printed text under time pressure.
Autism Spectrum
Autistic learners frequently possess exceptional abilities in pattern recognition, deep focus, systematic thinking, and attention to detail. Many autistic individuals thrive in academic environments when those environments are structured, predictable, and free from unnecessary social demands. The challenge is that traditional university settings are often the opposite: socially complex lecture halls with unpredictable dynamics, ambiguous assignment instructions, unwritten rules about classroom behavior, sensory overload from crowded campus spaces, and assessment formats that penalize differences in communication style rather than measuring actual knowledge.
St. Mary's's fully online, self-paced format removes virtually all of these barriers. Every lesson follows a consistent, predictable structure that students can rely on. The learning mode modal always appears first, offering explicit choices. Content is organized into clearly defined parts with transparent progression. Assessment criteria are published in detailed rubrics, eliminating the ambiguity that can cause significant anxiety for autistic learners. There are no unpredictable social interactions required, no sensory-overwhelming physical spaces, and no pressure to mask or perform neurotypical behavior. Students interact with content and AI systems on their own terms and at their own pace.
For autistic students who prefer to communicate in writing, text-based interaction is available throughout the platform. For those who prefer verbal communication, voice interaction is equally available. The AI tutor provides consistent, patient responses regardless of how many times a question is asked or how it is phrased. There is no social penalty for directness, no misunderstanding of tone in text-based communication, and no expectation of small talk or social pleasantries before getting to the academic content. The environment is designed to let autistic students direct their considerable cognitive abilities toward learning rather than toward navigating a socially complex and sensorily demanding campus environment.
Physical Accessibility & WCAG Compliance
St. Mary's is committed to meeting WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards across our entire learning platform. The following features ensure that students with physical disabilities and sensory impairments can engage fully with their education.
- Keyboard Navigation: Every function of the learning platform is accessible via keyboard alone. Tab navigation, focus indicators, and keyboard shortcuts ensure that students who cannot use a mouse can navigate fully.
- Screen Reader Compatibility: Semantic HTML, ARIA labels, and structured headings ensure compatibility with screen readers including JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver. All interactive elements are properly labeled and announced.
- High Contrast Options: The platform's clean design with navy, gold, and white provides strong default contrast ratios. Additional high-contrast options are available for students with low vision.
- Adjustable Text Size: Text size can be increased throughout the platform without loss of functionality or layout integrity. All learning modes support zoom up to 200% as required by WCAG guidelines.
- Audio Content Transcripts: All audio content in Interactive Video Mode and Podcast Mode has synchronized text transcripts. Students who are deaf or hard of hearing can access the full content through text.
- Voice Input Support: Press-to-talk voice interaction allows students with mobility impairments that make typing difficult to interact with AI checkpoints and the AI tutor through speech.
Customizable Learning Environment
Every student controls how their learning environment looks, sounds, and feels.
Mental Health & Well-Being
Academic anxiety is a significant barrier to learning for many students. The pressure of deadlines, the fear of falling behind peers, the stress of high-stakes examinations, and the social demands of campus life can compound to create mental health challenges that interfere with academic performance. St. Mary's's fully self-paced, online format is designed to reduce these pressures wherever possible.
There are no penalties for taking breaks. Students who need to step away for a day, a week, or longer due to mental health needs can do so without falling behind a cohort or missing irreplaceable live lectures. Their progress is saved and waiting for them when they return. The AI tutor provides a judgment-free zone for questions that students might feel embarrassed to ask in a classroom. There is no fear of looking foolish in front of peers, no anxiety about interrupting a lecture, and no social comparison with classmates who seem to understand material more quickly.
Pastoral care is an integral part of the St. Mary's community. As a faith-centered institution, we recognize that spiritual well-being and mental well-being are deeply connected. Our campus ministry team is available for students who need spiritual support, prayer, or simply a compassionate listener. Community support groups connect students who share similar experiences, creating a network of mutual encouragement and understanding that extends the Christian values of compassion and fellowship to every aspect of the student experience.
International & ESL Support
St. Mary's welcomes students from over 40 countries, and we recognize that studying in a second or third language adds a significant layer of challenge to any academic program. Our learning materials are written in clear, accessible English that avoids unnecessary jargon, cultural assumptions, and idiomatic expressions that can confuse non-native speakers. Where technical terminology is required, it is defined explicitly and used consistently.
The AI tutor is particularly valuable for ESL students because it can simplify language, rephrase complex sentences, provide additional context for culturally specific references, and answer vocabulary questions without judgment. Students can ask "What does this word mean?" as many times as they need without worrying about holding up a class or revealing gaps in their English proficiency.
The Podcast Listen Mode helps ESL students develop listening comprehension alongside content knowledge. The adjustable playback speed allows students to slow audio to 0.5x when processing complex English, gradually increasing speed as their comprehension improves. The synchronized transcript provides visual support for unfamiliar words. These are not separate ESL accommodations; they are features available to every student that happen to be especially beneficial for non-native English speakers.

Mature Learner Accommodations
Many St. Mary's students are working professionals, parents, caregivers, or career changers who are returning to education after years or decades in the workforce. Their needs and circumstances are fundamentally different from those of traditional 18-year-old students, and our platform is designed to accommodate those differences.
Flexible Scheduling
No fixed class times, no attendance requirements, no synchronous lectures. Study at 5 AM before the children wake, at midnight after the house is quiet, or during a lunch break at work. The platform is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and progress saves automatically.
Credit for Prior Learning
Working professionals bring years of practical experience that has educational value. St. Mary's recognizes prior learning through portfolio assessment and credit transfer, ensuring that students are not required to repeat material they have already mastered through professional practice.
Family-Friendly Policies
We understand that family emergencies, childcare challenges, and eldercare responsibilities can interrupt study plans without warning. There are no penalties for pausing your studies, and compassionate extensions are available when life requires your attention elsewhere.
